Amarillo
The Sanborn fire insurance map dated 1902 (Sheet 2) depicts a small one-story ironclad jail in Amarillo, Texas in the 100 block of 3rd Street (city block 35; lot 1). The courthouse had not been constructed at this time, and there was a Texas Ranger Station on the site. It was still there in 1904 (Sheet 4) and 1908 (Sheet 3) but the street had been renamed West 3rd due to the growth of the city. A two-story stone county jail was erected on the courthouse square in 1908. In 1913 (Sheet 10), the ironclad jail was gone and the county jail was the only lockup in town. The last year that Sanborn maps available for Amarillo was 1922 and the one that covered the courthouse square was not one of them.
