Cleburne
The first available Sanborn map for Cleburne, Texas was published in 1885. A small one-story wooden calaboose is depicted on the southeast bank of West Buffalo Creek and in the middle of Mill Street (Sheet 2). It was just to the north of the rock water works tower and across from a wooden building at 328 Mill (city block 22). It was still there in 1888 (Sheet 2) but it was vacant in 1893 (Sheet 2). In its place was a small one-story brick lockup just south of the water tower, also in the street. In 1898 (Sheet 3), the wooden building that once served as a calaboose was gone and the brick lockup was then referred to as a calaboose. The brick lockup was still there in 1904 (Sheet 5) but in 1910 (Sheet 8) the only jail in that area was a one story brick building attached to City Hall and the fire station at 114 West Wardville. It was still there in 1918 (Sheet 8), the last year that a Sanborn map was available for Cleburne. There is a small brick building in the general area that sells hamburgers. This building needs to be visited.
