Ennis
The Sanborn fire insurance map dated 1884 (Sheet 1) depicts a small one-story wood jail in the town of Ennis, Texas at 348 Dallas Street. In 1885 (Sheet 2) there was a small one-story wood calaboose in the 100 block of Dallas. The part of town that had a calaboose in 1884 is not depicted on the 1885 map. In 1890 (Sheet 2) it appears to be at 105 Dallas. No calaboose was seen on the 1896 maps. In 1901 (Sheet 2) there was a small one-story ironclad jail in the 400 block of West Knox Street (block 60). This jail was not in this location in 1896 (Sheet 2). In 1909 (Sheet 2) there was a small one-story ironclad calaboose at 207 North McKinney (city block 59). No jail or calaboose was seen on any of the 1915 Sanborn maps, the last date available during this study. The current jail is a three-story brick structure that was built in 1915. The calaboose was no longer needed when the new jail was built. I visited the 1915 jail that is still in use. Pictures are posted under “Other Jails.”
