Comanche
The photos of this very interesting calaboose were provided by Amanda Williams of the Comanche County Historical Museum in Comanche, Texas. More information will be posted later. The exact date of its construction is not known but it is depicted on the Sanborn map dated 1885 (Sheet 2) as being in city block 7 at 201 South 2nd Street (now West Mill Avenue). It was still depicted on the Sanborn maps in 1891, 1896, and 1902. A two-story county jail was erected in 1903 and it replaced the calaboose as a local jail. Iron shackles are currently on display beneath an oak tree on the courthouse square. They were supposedly taken from the calaboose.
I have not visited this site and the information presented here was taken from various Sanborn maps and the photos depicted here. The door and window are made of iron and connected by rivets. The original floor could have been stone or bare earth. At least one bed, also made of iron, was present. The current roof and slab on which it sits are not original.
