Quemado

DSCN5718

This concrete calaboose is located on private property in downtown Quemado on the Mexican border.  According to the owner, it was built in 1937.  It is 14′, 4″ across the front and 8′, 6″ on the sides (123.84 square feet).  The only windows are on the back wall.  They were covered with tin and it was not possible to get an accurate measurement of their size.  The best estimate is 23″ x 26″.  The two doors are metal bars and they are also covered with tin.  This is the only calaboose in the current sample that has doors of different sizes.  The door on the left measures 36″ x 82″ and the door on the left measures 36″ x 84″.  The roof has a slight pitch from front to back, ostensibly for water runoff.   This structure is currently being used by the owner for storage.  There were no Sanborn maps for Quemado at the time of this study.  This calaboose conforms to Floor Plan 2a (see Floor Plans).  It has been recorded at TARL as historic site 41MV399.
