Mount Pleasant
The Sanborn fire insurance map dated 1885 (Sheet 1) depicts a small one-story wood calaboose in the town of Mount Pleasant, Texas. At the time it was located at 227 Houston Avenue in City Block 13 near the county courthouse. In 1891 (Sheet 2) it had been moved or replaced by another small one-story wood calaboose at 124 Rusk Street (block 17). At the same time, there was a two-story brick county jail at 226 Houston Street. The small wood calaboose could have served as an interim lockup while the new brick jail was being constructed. The wood calaboose was still there in 1896 (Sheet 2) and 1901 (Sheet 3). In 1906 (Sheet 4) the building was still there but it was vacant and no longer labeled as a calaboose. In 1911, this building was gone. In 1920 (Sheet 2) the brick jail had been replaced by a three-story county jail made from reinforced concrete.
