Commerce

The Sanborn map dated 1896 (Sheet 2) depicts a small one-story wood calaboose in the town of Commerce, Texas. It was located in an open area just south of the Commerce Lumber Company with no apparent address. In 1906 (Sheet 3) and 1911 (Sheet 4) there was a small one-story wood calaboose at 136 Bonham in the same general area but oriented in a different direction. In 1901 (Sheet 1) there was a small one-story wood building at this location but it is not labeled as a calaboose. Perhaps, they used an existing building for a calaboose or the surveyors neglected to label it.  In 1922 (Sheet 3) and 1933 (Sheet 2) the earlier calaboose on Bonham Street is gone and replaced by a wood one-story calaboose in City Block 11 just south of Alamo Street.   These are the last Sanborn maps available during this study.  Therefore, this calaboose may still be standing.

Greenville

The Sanborn maps dated 1885 (Sheet 1) and 1888 (Sheet 2) show a one-story wood calaboose in Greenville, Texas at 318 ½ Robert E. Lee Street (city block 9) and very close to the two-story brick county jail.  It appears from the drawing that this calaboose had two cells.  Since this is the oldest Sanborn map available, it is only speculation that the wood calaboose was constructed to be used prior to the county jail. In 1893 (Sheet 2) it was no longer present. In 1898 (Sheet 2) a new brick county jail was under construction and a two-story brick lockup was attached to City Hall and the fire department in city block 19 at the corner of South Johnson and East Pickett streets. This lockup (later referred to as a jail) remained in this location through 1914.  According to the reference librarian at the public library, there are no small jails in town.

 

Greenville 1885

Wolfe City 

The Sanborn map dated 1896 (Sheet 1) depicts a small one-story wood calaboose in Wolfe City. It was located in city block 9 (lot 21) facing an alley to the west and next to a wooden lumber shed belonging to the Sublett Coulter & Co’s Lumber Yard. It was still there in 1901 (Sheet 2), 1909 (Sheet 2), and 1922 (Sheet 2). In 1909, the lumber shed was gone and the calaboose stood alone in an open area. In 1922, there were two wooden buildings next to it but they are not identified as to their function or owner. In 1934 (Sheet 2), a jail is in the same location but described as concrete.
